The optimal length of pre-operative smoking cessation
The longer the better. The optimum duration of smoking abstinence is linked to 4 months. This time relates to plasma life of erythrocytes that is about 120 days before they are degraded by the spleen and the liver.
Minimum length of pre-operative smoking cessation
According to ERAS, at least 4 weeks of not smoking prior to surgery can still be beneficial. No less than 4 smoke-free weeks are needed to decrease risk for infection, peri-operative respiratory problems, and wound complications.
